OOT Optimization?
« on: July 01, 2013, 07:27:57 PM »
Let me start by saying that I love your emulator so far!

My one concern is with Ocarina of Time.  The game is rather laggy and never goes above 20fps, basically making it unplayable.
Does anyone know a way to make it run smoothly?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Have you tried frameskipping? Or changing the video plugin? If you're truly desperate you can always set the video plugin to None. Then it'll definitely play full speed.

Yes, trying the different video plugins is key (Settings->Plugins).  The market version doesn't have frameskip for gles2glide64 yet, but there's a test version here that does and is definitely worth trying:

Edit: Just realized this was the OUYA section.  If you use the version in the link you'll need to sideload it.  If you don't know how to do that, don't worry, the official version will probably be updated in the next couple weeks.

Thanks for the replies!

Yeah I've tried every plugin with every possible combination of video settings, nothing works   :-\  which is weird because every other game I play works just fine (Mario Kart, Mario 64, Starfox 64, etc)

It's not too weird, considering certain areas in OOT are on the higher-end of N64 games.  In particular the forest with all the fairies and the open field.  I recommend using gles2n64 with frameskip set at "No more than 4" for these areas.  It is unfortunate that you start out in the forest, because most of the game (i.e. the levels) runs quite well on most devices.

The only downside to the n64 plugin is that it seems to not display textures when you zoom out in rooms.

I am still looking for the best plugin for this game, myself.

Try the new Glide plugin. Works almost flawlessly for me. There's a couple bugs, nothing game breaking.

Been playing ocarina of time on the ouya - using glide, 5 frameskips (default settings I think)

Everything was fine up until I met zelda and her face was going crazy, flickering, and ended up just being black (I've attached a photo).
Not game breaking at all just quite strange.

Then I got futher in to the game, the bit before the third dungeon as a kid where you have to use the teleport tunnel at the bottom of zoras domain. The teleport thing takes you to the hyrule lake where you have to find a bottle with a note it. As soon as I entered this tunnel the game crashed and took me back to the menu. I haven't tried again yet as my most recent save was from about an hour before. Was hoping someone else knew about this problem and if either of these 2 could be fixed? Thanks :)

Not sure about the "shades of time" bug there, but for the other one, if you can post a save state right before the problem occurs, I'll take a look (otherwise you'll have to wait until I have the time to play the game up to that point).

Hi Paul

I played some more tonight. The teleport crash did not happen, must have been a one off. I then played a bit on and as soon as I was inside jabu jabu, the game video looked like it had frozen but the music carried on. I had a save state from about 1 min before so tried again and it didn't do it the second time. Had no problems up until this point. Perhaps I've been unlucky to just experience 2 rare crashes so close to each other. Games like this could do with a 5 minute auto save state option :)

Or you could use the slot saves... that's kind of their main purpose.

Save slots are cool, it's just remembering to save regularly that is the problem
