Master list of games that require D-pad/L-button
« on: December 07, 2013, 05:36:46 PM »
Can anyone give me a list of games that require
 - (D-Pad and L-button) only
 - (D-Pad and L-button) and (Analog and Z-trigger)

Do any games exist that require (Analog and L-button) or (D-pad and Z-trigger)?  I'm guessing no but want to be sure.

D-pad/L-button only
Dr. Mario 64
Kirby 64
Pokemon Stadium 1
Pokemon Stadium 2
? Pokemon Puzzle League

D-pad/L-button and analog/Z-trigger
Doom 64 d-pad is redundant, nonessential
Duke Nukem 64
F-1 Pole Position 64
WWF No Mercy

D-Pad only:
Kirby 64
Pokemon Stadium 1
Pokemon Stadium 2
Dr. Mario 64
(Probably) Pokemon Puzzle League
Both:
Pause menu in Majora's Mask supports the D-Pad
Duke Nukem 64
Doom 64

Cool.  So sounds like it's not worth the clutter to use the 'Both' skin on MM?  Just Duke Nukem and Doom then?

On MM yeah probably not. With Duke Nukem, its sorta shortcut thing for change weapon more than anything else (probably not for movement) and with Doom its an alternate for the joystick (probably has strafing rather than turning on the dpad). Apparently fighting games use the dpad more often so maybe look at some of those.

F1 pole position requires a combination of them all (if i remember correctly, depending if that game even runs on the emulator)

With lylat wars (yes thats star fox in englandland) Z has the same function as L

Thanks guys.  Can someone please verify to see if the L-button is truly needed in Star Fox 64?  If L and Z do the same thing, then we can safely omit L.  Easy way to test is to go to Settings -> Input -> Touchscreen -> Button layout -> Both.  Then play the game and see if the L button does indeed provide unique functionality.  I would do it myself but I don't own the game and I'm busy with other parts of the project at the moment.

L = Left tilt, same as Z? seems bit stupid to not have it mapped to L
Z being awkward and counterintuitive in the middle

Why is that counterintuitive?  The analog stick is used to steer, and the way most people held the original N64 controller (with left hand on the middle prong), it would be nearly impossible to reach the L-button.  Z-button would have made more sense.  Tilt left with left index finger (Z), tilt right with right index finger (R).

L for left tilt would only have been intuitive if the analog stick and d-pad were swapped on the controller (or if humans had three arms :P)

Forsaken64, while I can't remember the L button function, I know that the D-Pad is used.
You use the Up and Down to cycle through the missiles you have to switch to another Missile weapon(In case you want to save the Nuke one for later), which are fired with R
And you use the Left and Right to cycle through your Lasers which are fired with Z.
C buttons help you strafe, A is for Acceleration and B is for brake and reverse (And of course the Analogue stick helps your steer)
