Just got reply from icon author, it seems that he has permission to use icons actually. So, no such copyright infringement is done.

I've decided to encourage these copycat publishers to actually work on the code, by creating some competition for them.  I'll be listing Mupen64Plus AE for free on the Android Market.  It won't have any ads (so they'll have their work cut out for them, haha)

It will have to be a separate branch, though, because Google doesn't let you post the same app twice (must have a unique package id)  I'd like to use a different icon though so the two branches won't be confused with each other (something that incorporates the current icon, I'm thinking, but not sure what just yet).

Just tag a free across the corner? Or tag donation across the original?

Since I'm very untalented in such things, I did'nt like to criticize other peoples work.

But this logo looks bad and destroys the message "this is mupen64plus-ae" totaly.
Maybe you should consider to design the logo like other icons in the market, where the "free" is diagonally across a corner of the logo.
It looks more decent and people can better recognize: "ah, that's mupen64plus-ae ! "

Eh... would be better if you set borders to red color for example or background to gray or any other color to make it noticable. Putting "Free" tag on icon is kinda useless, as you can just put that tag into name of app, unless that is not possible due to GP terms you explained before, then scorpio's idea is better.

I think you should keep it exactly as it is, but with 'free' on top somewhere small.
Need to make sure people understand that it is MupenPlusAE, just a free variant.
Also, I don't know if it is an option but maybe in this free version you could add a button linking to a place where they can donate to the cause?

Hmm.. So the idea is that if part of the logo is turned down, then the natural conclusion someone would have is that it is an incomplete (i.e. certain features disabled) version of the emulator?  To be honest, I think people will come to that same conclusion no matter how I list it, because they are simply not reading the app descriptions.

That being said, I could just do a subtle change to the icon background, so it is still a complete, recognizable Mupen64Plus AE icon but looks a tiny bit different:

Looks fine to me.  ;D

Even if you add a note at first run of app, they will sill probably ignore it, so this seems to be enough.

I've been thinking about this some more, and I really don't see any reason to be subtle about the differences.  The point of making the icon look different is so that folks see that it is a separate app (for organizing, unistalling, etc).  It has to be a different app (even if it is exactly the same), because Google doesn't allow you to list two apps with the same Android package ID.

I like the idea of having a corner turned down to reveal the word "Free", because it is sort of a symbolic way of saying "Oh BTW, in case you didn't read, this emulator is free."  If people don't like how the icon looks, they can always come here to get the main build for free, or donate 99 cents to get it through the market.  If they are too lazy to read the description and end up paying for the donation version thinking it has more features, then oh well...  ;)

Anyway, with that in mind, I might play around with the idea of the folded corner some more (since I just threw together the above image pretty quickly).  Another idea would be to put the word "free" on the back of the folded down piece (sort of like peeling a sticker that has something written on the back).  Something like this, maybe:

(BTW, I've been including the scaled versions just to show what it looks like in the smaller form that will appear on the actual device app list and status-bar)

Also, I don't know if it is an option but maybe in this free version you could add a button linking to a place where they can donate to the cause?
There is actually a reason I haven't put a "donate" link anywhere.  I prefer receiving small donations from lots of people, rather than large donations from a few people.  The reason for this is that nobody gets a sense of "owning" the project (I've seen many, many examples all over the internet where people who donate to projects then feel entitled to the features they want or updates on their schedule, and they get really nasty when they don't get those things).  Sharing the burden between everyone means I am equally obliged to everyone, and it ensures I work on the things that are most important across the board first.  And people feel more like they are part of a larger community working to improve the app, rather than like clients who are paying me for my development services.  Anyway, it's just how I feel.. doesn't necessarily mean it's the best way to do things.

It looks like "N64 Emulator" was removed from the market.  I'm wondering if it was because Brad was violating the GPL by never updated his source code repository.  "N64 Super Emulator" is still around.  I worry every time one of the emulators gets pulled (it would be nice if Google would publish their reasoning for removing apps).  I don't think Mupen64Plus AE is breaking any rules, as far as I can tell.

Well, you could use the bit different background for the free one and call it Mupen64+AE (whatever) Full&Free! and change the not free one as Mupen64+AE (donations), would make people think that all the emu is free, and also at beginning of desc you should put "NO ADS" or something to show them that donation is donation and not remove ads.
