Paul, or any other knowledgeable person...PLEASE HELP
« on: March 14, 2012, 10:36:05 AM »
I recently downloaded mupen64plusAE (Which I am assuming to be the latest version)

I have a NON rooted Samsung Admire, running gingerbread 2.3.4 with a 16gb sd card.

After multiple tweaks and reboots (following pauls tweak thread), whenever I try to start up my roms, the games wont start,
and the app closes itself while keeping the notification icon up.
I cant get any of them to work, and its driving me mad.
I retrieved the roms from a reliable source, and they all "somewhat" worked on one of the imitation apps in the marketplace

The roms I have attempted to run are:
Ocarina of Time
Master Quest
Majoras Mask
Goldeneye
And Perfect Dark

What can I do?

you could uninstall the app, then delete the following file on your phone (and its contents):

      [sdcard]/Android/data/paulscode.android.mupen64plus/

and then reinstall the app.
If that doesn't work then maybe there is something wrong with your phone setup???

also, try unzipping the files

Another thing you can try is the "Restore App Data" function in the Settings menu, and then reboot your phone.  If that doesn't fix the problem, please run the following debug build and provide the logcat output after it crashes:

Debug Build

If you aren't familiar with accessing the logs, I've posted instructions in this thread.

I just finished unzipping the files, and replacing the emulator.
Managed to get the games to start, but they are incredibly laggy,
And the emulator crashes to the homescreen...
Which is as far as I was able to get on the imitation builds.
All files are .z64 format.

I'm about to run the debug build and see if I cant get that logcat output for you guys.

Okay. I ran the debug build, and saved the logcat data, but theres one problem,

When I try to attatch the saved logcat, it wont let me.
All I am able to attatch are images and music files.

I suppose I'll have to send the file via traditional email.

Paul, what is your email?

Done, and done.
Over the course of the night, I managed to free up a little ram,
And in doing so, I managed to get the roms working.
The emulator no longer crashes to the homescreen,
But the games are insufferable.

OoT
MM
Master Quest
&007

All run without crash, but run at a max of 5 FPS, which is intolerable,

Perfect dark runs at a max of 3 fps, and the 3d environment never loads,
Causing you to glitch around in complete darkness

You should know how much I appreciate all your efforts put into these projects,
Youre awesome bro.

In the logcat you sent me, it looks like the app was shut down normally, and successfully saved the session.  It doesn't appear to have crashed (correct me if I'm wrong).  I'm not really sure on the memory issue, but it would definitely crash if your phone ran out of memory (a task manager and rebooting before playing may be a way to manage the problem)

As for the speed issue, this is mainly because the Samsung Admire is one of the ARM6 phones, which have a major speed disadvantage to the ARM7 phones (even if clocked at the same Mhz), due to floating point math.  I will work to improve and optimize the emulator over time, but it will probably be a while before games like OOT are playable on your phone.  With some tweaking you should be able to get lower-end games like Mario 64 to run at a playable speed, though.

When running the debug build, the emulator did crash to the homescreen upon loading OoT Master Quest,
But the icon stayed up in the notification bar.
After tweaking the settings to the point where it didn't crash,
I was afraid my phone was indeed the problem.
I apologize for the misconception, but give thanks for your involvment in the matter.
I can't wait to see this thing take off from beta testing.
I look forward to playing the final build (on a better phone of course).
I'm definitely going to donate toward this project, as you are an excellent developer, and have put so much effort into this.

Thanks again man.
