Galaxy S3 Problems?
« on: July 26, 2012, 10:03:25 AM »
I've started noticing that a lot of the comments about slow performance are coming from folks with the Samsung Galaxy S3.  The most recent guy mentioned that he had been getting better performance from the Galaxy S, which makes me think there is possibly something going on with this phone and not with what games they are trying to play.  I know the problem is not with ICS, because my Galaxy Nexus and my wife's Droid Razr both run ICS and the app performs extremely well on these two phones.

Does anyone on here with a Galaxy S3 have unusually slow performance?  If so, is it specific to gles2n64, or do both video plug-ins have the same slowness?

Oh no,  can't see any performance problems on my SGS3 with Exynos chipset.
Maybe it's the LTE variant with the Snapdragon dual core that have problems ?

meant to post about this too, its the same on my htc one X i get better performance on my optimus 2x

maybe its a quad core problem or tegra 3?

oh and no i think its just rice , ill double check though

edit: yeah rice has pretty much constant stuttering on mario
on gles its far far far better

on 2x it rice that was always quicker on mario atleast

I have sound and graphic stuttering on mario with an Allwinner A10 single core device with mali400 GPU that wasn't there on other hardware  before.
My new tablet is a tegra 3 device. I just tested mario the first time atm.
With gles2n64 I had the graphical glitch on first start too. Marios big face just hangs and the graphic filckers. Even if i press start the graphic didn't change.
Can't reproduce this with enabling/disabling options.
Bajo tooie the same. The first few second is all OK than if the turning logo faded in, it flickers and the graphic just hangs.
On rice, I didn't have it. But since the last weeks I didn't use this emulator very often.
All that happened on the last official version of mupen.

Most time I use the testversion with rice plugin.

Don't know why, but since you opened this thread I have graphic problems on all my devices. Latest beta, test app, rice/gles.  :o

I got the quad-core S3:

In Super Mario 64 i get 25fps in the intro (the face); 12fps with gles2rice. n64oid is a lot faster for me.....(dunno if this is the case generally)

I've got the dual core US variant (on Verizon) and have similar or worse performance.
Intro to Majora's Mask hovers around 5 fps with gles2rice, half that or less with gles2n64.
Super Mario 64 around 8 fps with gles2rice, half again with gles2n64.

This is with the suggested tweaks for lag, except I redraw the virtual pad.

People seem to lay the blame on an aggressive Ondemand Governor apparently mame4droid has similar slowdown in comparison to weaker tech

Interesting.  I wonder what N64oid does differently to get around the problem?  I'll have to do some research.

I didn't see any improvement when I used the performance governer, which just maxes out the CPU speed.

Can someone recommend a game for a quick test of the lag ?
Because on my SGS3 with rooted stock ROM, I can't see those extremly lags on Mario and Zelda -MM intro.

I just tried Mario again with the performance governor and though the FPS counter said 15, the game itself was buttery smooth. (gles2rice) At this point, I don't know if I'm going crazy.

mario is the one i was testing it with, from when he jumps out the pipe onward is pretty much performance drops constantly

Without frameskip, I have on both plugins the target framerate of 25 fps.
No matter if latest beta or test version with new menu.

The only thing is the old problem with the shadows and flickering frame and carpets on gles2n64.
With fs on rice activated, the counter shows only the half framerate from round about 12 frames, but that is a framecounter, not a performance problem.
Maybe you should consider a complete new installation of the emulator.

first thing i always do and done multiple times also tried it with old version of the emulator and i don't use show fps as my eyes can tell me when or when not I have framerate issues , ill make a video or atleast attempt too

its as if it looses juice then sprints to the next point looses juice sprints to the next point its weird weird scenario, is there a way to monitor cpu/gpu activity into a log

I'm going off topic a bit, but have you posted a logcat from the build with the flickering/missing shadows/carpet/stars?  Unfortunately there isn't a "magic bullet" to cover all devices with the correct polygon offset, so I have to add each one manually to the hardware profiler.  I know there are still a LOT of devices not covered yet, so I've just been adding them when I can.  Mario64 is the best test-case for getting the right values for each device, since wrong values are most noticeable for that game, and it is very easy to fix.  The exception is the Pandora, for which the problem doesn't seem to be fixable at all for some reason (that's the only unfixable case I've come across yet).
