64droid, is this a rip off?
« on: September 20, 2012, 08:06:49 PM »
They say they have permission from Paul but it looks fishy. Says it runs full speed on midrange devices and runs 98% of games. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fajolo.android.mupen64plusae

64droid is KinG-LioN's branch.  He actually did take time to ask if I had any problem with him publishing it (which I'm fine with, BTW), and he even left everyone in the credits which is nice.

Let me point out, while I'm on the subject, ANYONE who wants to is completely authorized to copy Mupen64Plus AE, because it is open-source and licensed under the GPL.  I don't have any problem with it, as long as they abide by the terms of the license, and don't go around taking folks down with bogus DMCA claims.  It would be nice if these devs would contribute something new to the code so the project can continue to improve, but they are not required to do so.  They shouldn't take it personally if I 1-star them for not contributing, either.  ;D

As for the description about compatibility and performance, I suspect those are a "little" over exagerated in order to sell more copies (since he's competing with the original which is free).  I've actually emailed KinG-LioN for his source code, so I'll see if there are any useful optimizations that can be applied back to this project (I'm hopeful that he has done some useful work, although I obviously don't expect the whole full speed on midrange devices claim - especially since he referred to himself as a "newbea" developer in the above thread).

Google definitely seems to be able to track banned developers who try creating alternate accounts.  KinG-LioN mentioned that he has been banned a few times.  That is the main reason I haven't touched Trev's developer account myself.  I really have no idea how smart Google's tracking system is.  Probably just based on IP, but could include things like browser cookies, unique computer ID, digital signatures, etc.

That's also why I really want to get Google to fix my old developer account, rather than trying to "fool the system".  No luck with that one, though.
